DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT ? Acupuncture needles are very fine sterile needles made from surgical stainless steel. They are disposable and will be used only once. The insertion of acupuncture needles is hardly felt. However, when they reach the depth of the acupoints, they may produce a sensation of soreness, heaviness, distention, or slight numbness, which are called needle sensation or arrival of Qi.
